Nestling high up on the sheltered eastern slopes of the Malvern Hills is a cluster of 3 white buildings, almost hidden from view by their own 7 acres of woodland; you have just happened upon The Cottage in the Wood Hotel.
The 48.2 km/ 30 mile views are, quite frankly, stunning. The Cotswold Hills form the horizon and, to the south-east, can be seen the spires of Cheltenham and on to Gloucester with its backdrop of Birdlip Hill. Step straight onto the Malvern Hills and blow away those cobwebs with miles of winding footpaths. Perfect for hardened walkers and for those who just want a gentle stroll.
The Cottage in the Wood is made up of 3 buildings. The Main House (or Dower House) is the heart of the operation, consisting of the restaurant, 8 bedrooms and conference facilities.
The restaurant is an elegant room adorned with striking 100 year old Indian and Moghul prints, and below the panorama stretching to the horizon some 30 miles or so, from tall Georgian windows.
A cosy bar/ lounge with its focal point being a roaring log fire in winter, offers a good selection of malts and a large gin collection. The choice is sure to set you up for your meal. And afterwards, what about a Cognac, Armagnac or single malt as a nightcap?
Upstairs there are 8 bedrooms, which, whilst not large, are individually designed and stocked to ensure your comfort. Some are front-facing and 2 boast four-poster beds.
70 leisurely paces brings you to the oldest building, Beech Cottage. This old cottage is marked on all the old maps of the area and pre-dates the Main House by 100 to 150 years - in its time it has been a woodman's cottage and Cider Scrumpy house. It now has 4 peaceful cottagey bedrooms, one of which is a four-poster.
Beyond lies "The Pinnacles", built in 2003 on the original site of the Coach House, which was originally the home for the carriages of the main house. The Pinnacles has 19 bedrooms, almost all of which have front-facing views. Some rooms are suites, some have sun-trap balconies, and as if to make up for the longer stroll from the main building, with quite the most magnificent views of all! The 1st and 2nd floor of The Pinnacles are non-smoking bedrooms.
